A lot of older UK homes still have a fuse box that has never been touched since the property was built, or was last updated decades ago, and it is worth understanding why that matters, rather than only replacing it once something visibly goes wrong. A consumer unit upgrade is one of the more common recommendations that comes out of an electrical inspection, and knowing what it actually changes helps you judge whether it is worth prioritising.

Older fuse boards typically use rewireable fuses — a fuse holder with a length of fuse wire inside that is designed to melt and break the circuit if it is overloaded. That said, several practical signs are worth treating as a prompt to get a professional opinion: a wooden-backed or bakelite fuse box, rewireable fuses using actual fuse wire rather than modern cartridge fuses or circuit breakers, a single large on/off switch with no separate breakers for individual circuits, visible scorch marks or a burning smell near the unit, or an electrical safety report (an EICR) that has flagged the absence of RCD protection as a defect. Any of these is a reasonable basis for asking an electrician to take a proper look, even if nothing has obviously gone wrong yet.
